A confession

My name is Darlene and I have mono.

These days, I'm trying to take it just one day at a time. Kind of "let go and let God," you know what I mean?

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know about my favorite weapon in the war against the virus. No, I am not talking about Noni or Xengo. Here it is:

Now, doesn't that look tasty?

(We gratefully acknowledge Johnna-the-great for providing the beautiful rose.)

I have to thank my mother-in-law for introducing me to this drink that looks like battery acid. It is called "green juice" at my house, and "parsley-pineapple juice" at hers. Here's how you make it: wash and trim one bunch of fresh parsley. Throw it in the blender with some pineapple juice and whizz away until it is as pulverized as possible. Then strain it according to your daring (cheescloth, strainer, or not at all--if you don't mind eating your juice). Then drink. Voila! You might be scared of the look and sound of it, but believe me: it is one of the most refreshing things you'll ever taste. (And very good for you.)

So here's my question: what are your comfort foods when YOU are sick?

p.s. I'd like to come over and visit with you about a fantastic plan for independent wealth that involves sharing this recipe and others like it with people whose health you care about. If you don't want me to come, just give me the names of ten people I can call instead! Thanks!

p.p.s. You really did know I was kidding, right?

Rice Chex.

When I was doing chemo and my entire digestive system was completely schizophrenic 'cause chemo kills ALL fast-growing cells which includes the lining of everything from your mouth to your ... um, uh ... the bathroom the gentlest food I could manage to endure was Rice Chex which I ate a lot of because eating tempered the nausea so I wound up looking just like the Pillsbury Doughboy ... minus the chef's hat. (That was a run-on sentence which writers don't do because they're really smart about that kind of thing.)

Favorite comfort food whether ill or well is spaghetti noodles with no-bean chili and cheddar cheese and diced raw onions.

Usually when I'm sick I eat unadorned, unspiced, unsalted scrambled eggs. And applesauce. And water. Lots and lots of water.

I can vouch for the tastiness of Darlene's Green Juice. I tried some at her house and it was, indeed, refreshing and yummy.

When I was little, my mother always made me Milk Toast when I was sick. Anyone else ever heard of Milk Toast? You warm up milk, plop in a dab of butter (the real stuff) and a dash of salt and pepper, then dip hot toast in it. Don't tell anyone, but I never really liked the stuff.

When I get sick now, my wonderful husband makes me homemade chicken noodle soup with lots of onions and lots of garlic. He even makes the noodles from scratch! Whatta guy.

During the first trimester of pregnancy I always have to have oranges--lots and lots of oranges. And I can't stand even the thought of chocolate. Wish that one would last. :-(

Anything that's not good for me.

Well, I guess it depends on what kind of sick. Cold sick is one thing, gastrointestinal sick is another...and pregnancy a big other.

My first pregnancy I ate wheat chex and blueberry pancakes. I was able to eat those foods again about ten years later.

I made the mistake of eating lamb during my second pregnancy. Greek Easter has been ruined forevermore.

My last pregnancy I ate walnuts, swiss-tomato-and-rye-bread sandwiches, and taco salads.

What's my comfort food? Chocolate, of course. Isn't that everybody's?

Scott: I love Rice Chex, too. Could you eat them with milk? I like it when they get soggy, actually. I've never had chili spaghetti. Hmmmmm.

Sharlee: I've actually had milk toast, given to me on the day I thought I had a brain tumor (turned out to be a classic migraine--you know what I'm talking about) by my sweet mother-in-law. I was too nauseous to enjoy the food, but I was very touched by the sentiment.

Kathy: I've never been able to enjoy cheesecake as much since an unfortunate incident while I was pregnant. Pregnant cravings are a whole nother subject, but I remember my strongest craving when pregnant was for fajitas one night (I always craved meat) and I patched one together with what I had on hand and I'll never forget the HUGE sense of release/fulfillment when I got that thing in my mouth. Nothing like fulfilling a craving.

D. Michael: of course. That one went without saying. But it's another argument to get into what KIND of chocolate, specifically.

Hot Chocolate.

For years and years I would dip my toast in it but recently I decided it's better without.

Spiced cider or hot chocolate. Also, creamy chicken & rice soup or tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich. When I'm sick, simple is good.
